What did Benedict Cumberbatch say about his future as Doctor Strange?

In a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival, Cumberbatch teased his future in the MCU, saying there is more to explore with his character.

“I’m interested to see where these costs take him,” Strange said, via Variety. “There’s a lot to play, and it’s very exciting.”

Cumberbatch first appeared as Stephen Strange in the 2016 film Doctor Strange. The original story, directed by Scott Derrickson, highlighted how Strange went from a gifted surgeon who lost the use of his hands to a master of the mystical arts. Cumberbatch has described Marvel films as “great gestures” and loves the way they can capture popular culture.

“When they’re really good, they capture the zeitgeist and speak to us and our culture. They’re a lot of fun to do,” Cumberbatch said.

Doctor Strange grossed over $677 million and was a surprise hit for Marvel. Why was a movie about magic so successful? Cumberbatch attributes it to how the film deals with spirituality.

“It was something we hadn’t seen in the MCU, completely new ground,” Cumberbatch said of the film’s use of spirituality. “Also what it brings in terms of harnessing power through sheer will. This is a superpower, and as an origin story, it’s very rich.”

Cumberbatch reprized his role in the sequel, 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Cumberbatch has also played major roles in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

It is unknown when Cumberbatch will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are the most likely candidates, considering that Strange is a member of the superhero team.
