evil It was reportedly banned from showing in theaters in Kuwait, with some believing the reason was related to the film’s many LGBTQ cast members.

According to a report from Variety, the film was removed from cinema listings in the country just a day before its release date. The report describes this issue as “evolving,” without specifying specific causes yet. However, Kuwait has previously banned Barbie from being displayed in the country due to “public morality” issues, and many believe Wicked could receive the same treatment.

In 2023, Kuwait also banned the A24 horror film “Talk to Me” due to the film having a trans actor. The country hasn’t officially said anything about this, and no one at Wicked or Universal has been involved yet.

Wicked is now available in theaters

The Wicked is directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by musical book writer Winnie Holzman. It is based on Maguire’s best-selling novel and Tony Award-winning musical.

James as ShenShen, Ethan Slater as Boq, and more.

“The film tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz: Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power; and Glinda, a popular young woman, dazzled by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.” The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fictional Land of Oz and form an unlikely but profound friendship. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take completely different paths. Glinda’s unwavering desire for popularity leaves her tempted by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself and those around her will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will eventually lead them to fulfill their destinies as the good Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Villains: Part 1 is now available in theaters. The sequel, Wicked: Part Two, is currently scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.
