28 Years Later is a post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Boyle. Released in June 2025, it serves as a sequel to the 2002 film 28 Days Later 28 Weeks Later.

What do we know about 28 years later?

28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Keleman, and Edvin Riding. Cillian Murphy will also reprise his role as Jim from 28 Days Later in the film, although it’s unclear how big a role the character will play.

Talk to IndieWire In October 2024, Fiennes teased the film’s plot, saying: “Britain has been 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with only a few pockets of uninfected communities. It’s about a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother.” He leads his mother through this beautiful terrain in the north of England but of course the people hiding in the woods, hills and woods are the infected but he finds a doctor, a man who we might think would be strange and strange. But he is actually a force for good.

28 Years Later, which Boyle co-wrote alongside Alex Garland, is the first film in a new trilogy of sequels. It was filmed alongside the second film in the new series, 28 Years Later Part II: Temple of Bones, directed by Nia DaCosta.

“28 Years Later” will be released in U.S. theaters on June 20, 2025, by Sony Pictures Releasing. “28 Days Later” is not currently available to view on any major streaming service, while “28 Weeks Later” can be viewed on Hulu.
