Spike Lee He recently spoke about his upcoming film, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, as well as any potential plans the director might have for when he retires.
What did Spike Lee say about his retirement?
Speaking during an appearance at the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday (via THR), Lee talked about the idea that he might retire. The 67-year-old director asked the audience how old the legendary Kurosawa was when he retired. After being told that Kurosawa stopped at 81, he joked to me that he still had plenty of time to make things.
“Yes. Here’s the thing though. How old was Kurosawa when he made his last film?” “Can anyone look that up,” Lee asked. “81? Yes, I have some time left. Whether it is God or God I am blessed. . . If you are able to make a living doing what you love, it is a blessing. . . As I got older, I realized that it was my destiny to become a filmmaker.
Lee’s next film, Highest 2 Lowest, is an English-language remake of Kurosawa’s acclaimed 1963 film High and Low. The film will feature an all-star ensemble led by Denzel Washington and Ifenesh Hadera. The original High and Low film was released in 1963, directed by Akira Kurosawa. It stars Toshiro Mifune as Kengo Jundo, Tatsuya Nakadai as Inspector Tokura, Kyoko Kagawa as Rikuo Jundo, and Tatsuya Mihashi as Kawanishi.
“Toshiro Mifune plays a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a ruthless kidnapper in Akira Kurosawa’s quintessential film noir,” reads the synopsis for the 1963 film. “Based on Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, High and Low is an intriguing film and a fascinating commentary on contemporary Japanese society.”
Spike Lee’s High and Low doesn’t have an official release date yet.
