Derek Groves, the latest inmate to be arrested after escaping from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in May, blew a kiss for cameras while in custody.
Video footage from the arrest showed police escorting Groves to a car as he looked up and blew a kiss, a bold gesture that capped nearly five months on the run. Law enforcement sources said WWL That officers surrounded a home in southwest Atlanta after receiving a report that Groves was inside. Police reportedly gassed the residence several times before Groves surrendered.
Groves escaped from a New Orleans prison on May 16 with nine other inmates. While the others were all caught within weeks, Groves managed to evade law enforcement for months, making him the latest escapee from a jailbreak in Orleans Parish.
He was serving time for the 2018 Mardi Gras Day murders of two men in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, and was awaiting sentencing at the time of his escape.
