Westeros is headed to the big screen as a Game of Thrones movie is in early development at Warner Bros.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Westeros is set to move from television to cinema for the first time. The project is in a “very early stage of development” as there is no director, writer or stars currently attached to it. However, this is the first time WB has seriously considered producing a Game of Thrones movie. There’s no word yet on whether it will be a sequel to the completed HBO series or a spin-off.
This isn’t the first time the Game of Thrones storyline has been played out. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss previously wanted to make three films instead of the final season of the TV show. This idea was completely rejected by HBO, and the disappointing season we received was the end result.
Since the main show ended, we’ve seen two prequels come to fruition. Two seasons of House of the Dragon have aired (a third is on the way), and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will arrive in 2025. A Jon Snow sequel series has been cancelled, which could lead to an idea for the film.
What is Game of Thrones?
“Trouble is brewing in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. For the inhabitants of this dreaming world, control of the Iron Throne of Westeros holds the lure of great power. But in a land where the seasons can last a lifetime, winter is coming… and behind the Great Wall that protects them, an ancient evil has returned.” “Based on the best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin, this epic HBO drama series takes place in a fantastic world where noble families are locked in a deadly battle for control.”
Game of Thrones featured a large ensemble cast that included Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Iain Glen, Alfie Allen, and many more.
