Harry Potter HBO Show Production Date Set, Over 30,000 Kids Auditioned

Just one day after reports surfaced that Papa Essiedu had been offered the role of Severus Snape, Warner Bros. The series is eyeing a production start date next summer, when filming begins in Leavesden, England, where Warner Bros. Discovery on Studio.

Along with news about the production start schedule, during a presentation at the company’s headquarters in London on Thursday (via diverseWarner Bros. announced. Discovery also reported that the show had auditioned more than 32,000 children for lead roles. WB says the series’ casting department reviews 500 to 1,000 tapes a day in an effort to find stars.

Gardiner and Milhaud also said that the series will adhere to the basic eras of the characters as presented in J. K. Rowling’s books.

What do we know about the Harry Potter HBO show?

The Harry Potter series is described as a “decade-long” project, with each season expected to adapt one book from Rowling’s popular book series. Currently, the search for the next Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley characters is still ongoing in the UK and Ireland. The child actors cast will be aged between 9 and 11 in April 2025, with a potential start date teased for production.

It’s not yet clear who will be in the cast, although rumors have been circulating that other actors, including Dumbledore and Voldemort, may be cast.

The HBO adaptation is being written by Emmy Award-winning producer Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession). The series is executive produced by Gardiner, Mark Mylod, Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kinley-Letts, and longtime Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. Milhaud, who worked with HBO on Games of Thrones and The Last of Us, will also direct several episodes. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
