like Yellowstone Season 5 is coming to a close, and perhaps the end of the Dutton saga, depending on how things go. Luke Grimeswho played Kayce Dutton for seven years, reflects on the journey and already expects some fans won’t be thrilled with what happens, no matter what. In an interview with Esquire, Grimes shared his thoughts on saying goodbye to Kayce, the complex issues in the finale, and why the show’s conclusion may leave some viewers unsatisfied.




The biggest shock of the season came early with the death of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), a turning point that reshaped the story and allowed Cayce and the other characters to step into new roles. While Costner’s departure was a big moment for fans, Grimes admitted that it led to a smoother production. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin that was gone which meant some of the conflict was gone,” he said. “It was actually the easiest season we’ve shot“.

For Kayce, this season was a chance to take charge, especially with his unexpected plan to save the farm. “It was a running joke on set that the stupid cowboy found out about,” Grimes joked. “Kayce is the silent killer, and it’s great when he uses that energy for something good“.


Luke Grimes thinks some fans will be angry about the ending of ‘Yellowstone’.


Grimes himself was heavily influenced by the final scripts. Although casual Taylor Sheridan Long insisting that he did not want the actors to know the ending to avoid affecting their performance, Grimes read the ending before filming. “It really caught my attention. I felt completely connected to the story again, and I couldn’t imagine it ending any other way,” he said. When asked if fans would be satisfied with the finale, Grimes was honest about his feelings, admitting that he didn’t think they could please everyone.

“At the pace we’re going, I don’t think they’ll be satisfied with anything. Some people will realize it was very well written and well executed. But a big part will be angry that it’s over, which is fair.”

Today also saw the announcement of A Yellowstone Follow-up series, featuring Cole Hauser and Kelly ReillyBut not to mention Grimes. Although he’s open to playing Kayce again in the future, he’s not sure how that will work.


Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his familyHe said. “He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega-farm that is unsustainable in today’s era. He wants a little piece of heaven. It’s that simple“.
