Offset credits his eldest son for helping him kick his codeine addiction.
During his appearance on Honey this is Keke Palmer podcast, Offset talked about how he got into codeine in the first place, and blamed it for taking rap music too seriously.
“You do a lot of things to adapt because it’s a lot,” Offset said after about 35 minutes. “You’re traveling a lot of the time. You can’t be with your kids a lot of the time. People say this and that.”
Offset revealed how he finally got over it thanks to a conversation he had with his child. “I had a wake-up call with my oldest son,” the rapper began. “He kept ordering the pineapple Fanta, but he doesn’t really drink soda.”
“One day, he came into the studio and asked, ‘Why is your soda a different color than mine?'” He continued, “It killed me.”
“I had to lie to him and say, ‘My property is old,'” Offset added. And I’m about to throw it away.’” “I grabbed it and ran out, and I went into the room and almost cried because I felt bad as a father.”
Offset’s dependence on codeine affected other members of his family as well. “My mom didn’t like it, nobody in my family liked it, and it started to hurt,” Offset admitted. “When your mom calls you and says, ‘You have to get rid of these things’ two or three times, it hurts.”
Elsewhere in his honest conversation with host Keke Palmer, Offset revealed that he considers Takeoff to be the “glue” that kept Migos together.
“It wouldn’t be the same without my son because he was the glue the whole time,” Offset said. “It’s the glue. It’s the glue in everything. It’s the glue in everything. It’s the glue in everything. It’s the glue in everything.” […] In the group you have vanity. We have grown up as men. We’ve got millions of dollars and vanity. But homie will be so humbled at all times […] We just kept one.”
“I never forget my roots, do I? I still represent that, because at the end of the day this is still my family,” Offset continued. “I’m still Migos at the end of the day. When I come back to my neighborhood, there’s a crew of us, and we’re Migos. So it never gets far from me. All I gotta do is carry the torch. I gotta keep it.”
