Sing Sing Theatrical Rerelease Date Set as A24 Expands Oscar Hopeful

Theatrical re-release date for Singing singing It has been announced.

Sing Sing, directed by Greg Koedar, will be released in US theaters in July 2024. The film stars Colman Domingo and Paul Raci alongside a number of men who were formerly incarcerated in real life.

The film premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was acquired by A24.

December 2, 2024 Sing Sing proved it could be a major contender at this year’s Academy Awards as it won a number of awards — including Outstanding Lead Performance (Domingo), Outstanding Supporting Performance (Clarence MacLaine), and a Social Justice Honor — At the Gotham Awards.

When is the theatrical re-release date for Sing Sing?

per diverseA24 has now decided to return Sing Sing to US theaters nationwide on January 17, 2024.

“A24 released the picture on July 12,” the Variety article notes. “However, despite the months that have passed since its debut, the independent studio has refrained from releasing it digitally or on other streaming platforms. The film is seen as a serious Oscar contender.

The synopsis for Sing Sing reads: “Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theater group with other incarcerated men. When a wary stranger joins the group, the men decide to make their first comedy Original to them, in this moving true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable cast of formerly incarcerated actors.

“It has the power to change one’s perception of who they are in their relationship to the world and how they can contribute,” McLean told Variety about the film. “It’s not designed to create actors, it’s designed to create human beings who can better contribute to society.”

Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced on Friday, January 17, 2025.
