Venom: The Last Dancedirected by Kelly Marcel and starring Tom Hardy, premieres in US theaters on October 25, 2024, and opens below projections. The film has an approval rating of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has performed well in international markets, especially in China, where it achieved the highest opening for a superhero there since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. In contrast, the weak domestic performance indicates potential box office fatigue for Sony’s franchise Venom in North America.
Venom: The Last Dance topped the global box office, but performed poorly domestically
Sony’s Venom: The Last Dance saw mixed results in its opening weekend, pulling in a strong global box office with $175 million but underperforming in the US (via Hollywood Reporter).
Domestically, the film grossed $51 million, below expectations of $65 million. This was significantly lower than its predecessors, Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which opened with $80 million and $90 million, respectively. However, international markets helped boost the film’s grosses, especially with a strong debut in China.
Overseas audiences contributed $124 million from 64 global markets, making it the third-biggest Hollywood release globally in 2024, behind Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. The film grossed $46 million in China, marking the country’s biggest Hollywood opening of 2024. This also marks the highest-grossing superhero debut in China since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.
The performance in China reflects the ongoing international reach of the Venom series, in contrast to low domestic interest influenced by competition, including the ongoing World Championships. Sony’s investment in The Last Dance, which was produced on a budget of about $120 million, has received support in global markets.
The external results are consistent with Sony’s planned expansions of the Venom universe. Industry analysts point out that factors such as comic book fatigue and seasonal events, such as Halloween, are likely to impact domestic performance, while strong international exposure highlights the franchise’s resilience overseas.
