The film ends with John Kramer, the “dead” body lying on the bathroom floor throughout the entire film, standing up when he is revealed to be Jigsaw’s true killer. He stands up and leaves Adam (portrayed by Whannell) in the bathroom to bleed and die.
Lee and Neilwho wrote the screenplay for the original Saw film, attended BlumFest at New York Comic Con 2024 to promote his upcoming horror film Wolf Man. ComingSoon asked him for his thoughts on the ending on the film’s 20th anniversary.
Leigh Whannell talks about Saw’s famous ending
“You know when I wrote the first Saw movie, and I was working alongside James Wan, we were in Australia, [and] We both remember that we had something special. “Now, we didn’t necessarily know it was going to be a huge hit at the box office, but we knew that anyone who watched it would have a reaction. There’s no better feeling in the world to say, ‘Oh, I’m sitting on top of something right now.’ I have a secret. And when I was writing the ending, and it was flowing through my fingers because I was like, ‘This is going to work.’
The film premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews at three packed midnight screenings.
“Seeing the impact the ending had on people was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever experienced, especially in a movie theater,” Whannell says. “Of all the movies I’ve been in, watching the end of Saw with an audience was the craziest thing ever. I can get goosebumps now just thinking about it.
