Murphy and Condon previously collaborated on the 2006 film Dreamgirls, which also starred Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson. The film earned Murphy an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, while Hudson won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The film’s screenplay is being written by Virgil Williams, based on an earlier draft by Max Werner. Katherine Davis, a lifelong fan of George Clinton, approached Murphy, who would produce the film, with the idea for the project.

Katherine Davis will also serve as producer alongside John Davis and Greg Yolen. Charisse Hewitt Webster, Clinton, Archie Ivey and Jeff Jampol will serve as executive producers.

Based on Clinton’s memoir – Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Isn’t that kind of fun hard for you? The film “is the untold story of the influential funk pioneer and his turbulent journey to found the music collective Parliament-Funkadelic. Known for their bizarre sci-fi themes, surreal sounds and psychedelic performances, Clinton and his band redefined music and culture.”

In addition to Dreamgirls, Murphy is known for starring in Beverly Hills Cop and voicing Donkey in the Shrek films. His filmography also includes 1982’s 48 Hours, 1987’s Eddie Murphy Row, 1988’s Coming to America, 1996’s Professor Josie, 1998’s Dr. Doolittle, 2003’s The Haunted Mansion, 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name, and more.

While he will return to voice Donkey in 2026’s Shrek 5, Murphy will also soon appear in Tim Story’s The Pickup, co-starring Pete Davidson and Keke Palmer.
